PERFORMANCE ANNOUNCEMENT
March 13, 2010

“The Pops and All That Jazz” is the theme for the Salem Pops Orchestra’s concert on March 13, 2010, beginning at 7:30 PM in the Historic Elsinore Theatre.   Under the baton of conductor Larry Harrington, the program will feature the marvelous vocal stylings of Salem’s own Andrea Miller.

Ms. Miller comes from a musical family.  Her father, Joe, is currently the Principal Clarinetist in the Salem Pops Orchestra and has been involved in music around Salem for years.  Andrea has been in music and theater since she was a child.  Among her many accolades are singing the title role in the Pentacle Theater production of “Annie” and winning the Oregon State Vocal Competition when she was only 14 years old. She is a 1991 graduate of Sprague High School and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in the University of Southern California’s Theater Arts program.  She is currently based out of Los Angeles, performing regularly with her jazz quartet.  She has appeared to critical acclaim in dozens of venues, including the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, the Ritz Carlton Pasadena, The Four Seasons, the Regent Beverly Wilshire and many prominent jazz clubs.

In addition to performing live, including singing with several bands, she works as a “Session Singer” for recording studios.  She recently recorded on the vocal “Demo” for Celine Dion’s “I knew I Loved You” at David Foster’s studio that included Quincy Jones, David Foster and Alan and Marilyn Bergman.  Her voice has been described as soulful, sensual, hypnotic and endearing.  She recently completed her first full length solo jazz album entitled “Perfect Day” and a beautiful duo album, “ll by ll,” with pianist Yoon Seung Cho on which they perform 10 jazz standards, combining jazz and classical backgrounds.

Her program with the Pops will include “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” “Black Coffee,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” “Stompin’ At the Savoy,” “Love For Sale,” “Day in the Life of a Fool” and a gorgeous unaccompanied presentation of “Amazing Grace.” A very special treat will be Andrea singing “God Bless the Child” in a musical conversation with her father, Joe, on clarinet.

The Pops’ program will include George Gershwin’s “An American in Paris Suite,” a tribute to Louis Armstrong appropriately titled “Satchmo,” Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five,” “A Salute to the Big Bands,” Chuck Mangione’s “The Children of Sanchez,” a Frank Sinatra medley “A Salute To Ol’ Blue Eyes”  and a compilation called simply “Duke Ellington.”  Scott Napper, the Pops’ Principal Trumpet for several years, will make his debut as the Pops’ Assistant Conductor directing “Leroy Anderson Favorites.”

Tickets are $18 for Mezzanine Reserved seating and $15 for General Admission.  Students with ID are $5 and children 12 and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult.  Tickets are available through the Historic Elsinore Theatre box office at 170 High Street SE, through all Safeway Tickets West outlets, by phone at 1-800-992-8499 and from Salem Pops members.
