November 16,  2022

December 11, 2022
3:00 PM

Chemeketa Community College Auditorium

Join us Sunday, December 11 at 3:00 pm for our annual Christmas Concert featuring Dr. Kevin Helppie, baritone at Chemeketa Community College Auditorium, 4000 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, OR, Building 6, Access from 45th Ave NE

The POPS Christmas Concert is a mix of classic carols, popular music, a dash of classical and always fun! We've even heard from the North Pole that a special guest may be making an appearance.

The POPS is excited to have Dr. Kevin Helppie return as our featured guest. A frequent solo vocal performer throughout the Northwest, Kevin’s style is a happy combination of Luciano Pavarotti and Bing Crosby.  If you need a little push to get into the holiday spirit, this will do the job!

A POPS Evening with Adam Harris

October 16, 2022

Join the Salem Pops Orchestra on Sunday, November 6th at 3:00 pm in the Chemeketa College Auditorium for an evening of their signature mix of popular, light classical, and jazz music with well-known West Coast Jazz Artist (and newly-elected Director of Jazz Studies at Western Oregon University) Adam Harris. The program will feature Harris playing John Williams's seductive music from “Catch Me If You Can” for saxophone and orchestra, plus a variety of jazz and pop favorites.  The program will also include a special salute to our veterans.

Adam Harris is an Oregon-based jazz saxophonist, composer and music educator. Over the last decade, he has established a reputation for himself as a powerful voice in the Pacific Northwest music scene.

In addition to maintaining a busy teaching schedule, Adam performs professionally on a regular basis throughout the west coast. Over the past several years, he has shared the stage with some of the world's most famous jazz musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Dave Holland, Randy Brecker, and Joshua Redman.

In 2022, Adam accepted a full-time teaching position at Western Oregon University as their Director of Jazz Education and Saxophone Professor.

Led by Dr. Ike Nail, the Salem Pops Orchestra is an all-volunteer orchestra dedicated to bringing a variety of popular and light classical music to the Salem, Oregon community. They will be performing at Chemeketa Community College, 4000 Lancaster Dr NE, Salem, OR, in the Auditorium in Building 6. Access is off 45th St SE.

Tickets are available online or at the door prior to the show.

Salem Pops Orchestra: The “Not-So-Little” Orchestra That Could

October 1, 2022

The Covid Pandemic restrictions were particularly tough on the Salem Pops. We are the oldest community music group in Salem, but what we do was totally illegal for two years. Our goals are to provide a place where dedicated amateurs can continue to make music in their adult years and to present high quality performances of great music of all styles to the Salem community.

Being unable to rehearse or perform shut us down completely. By the early spring of 2022, we had not met together for two years.  Instruments were sitting unused.  Skills were rusting.  It was plain that we had to either get busy or disappear.  We decided to gather ourselves and present a concert. And we needed a cause to inspire us. Ukraine’s astonishing resistance of Russian aggression was on all our minds. We agreed that such bravery deserved support (and besides, we hate bullies.) We decided to dedicate the proceeds of the concert to Ukrainian relief. We joined forces with the Western Oregon University Orchestra and started “doing our thing”. The concert was a huge success both musically and financially. Thanks to great community interest and support, we raised over $3,000. It will be formally presented to the Ukrainian Red Cross at the November 6 concert.

The Pops is back! Join us for our 22-23 season. It’s music you really want to hear!
